Sense of Place Landscaping Project in Memphis | Gurley's Azalea Garden

The clients sought our help addressing an existing pond they found too diminutive for their 80-acre property. They were interested in building a waterfall and trusted Gurley’s to design an elegant solution. We began by raising the area around the pond with a series of boulder retaining walls, a functional necessity for the waterfall that also served to increase the overall visibility of the water feature itself. Next, over the course of two months, we hauled and placed nearly 500 tons of rock to create a second, larger pond. We then built two connecting streams that flowed from the new pond to the original. Finally, we constructed a patio and fire-pit area adjacent to the streams to serve as the perfect place to sit and enjoy the calming sounds of the finished waterfall.

Using the waterfall as a centerpiece, our final touch was designing complementary scenic features that take advantage of the spectacular view and expansive landscape:
- an outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven
- a fireplace and multiple fire pits
- custom cedar arbors
- a flower garden with a bridge
- meandering creek beds surrounded by beautiful plantings.

Our clients now have a richly appointed outdoor environment where they can entertain, relax and escape from the rest of the world.
