Annuals

What are annuals?

Annuals are blooms that only bloom once, but they do offer advantages to gardeners in warm climates like Memphis, since they thrive in our area. Annual blooms in the Mid-South are vibrant and colorful, last the entire season with the proper care and nutrients, and make a great addition to any flower bed. Annuals also make ideal edging flowers that compliment any garden path or walkway.

When do you plant annuals?

In the Memphis area, annuals should be planted in Spring, after any chances of frost are long gone, but before the summer heat arrives. We recommend planning in April or May for optimal results.

Which flowers are annuals?

Some of the most common types of annuals include:

  • Begonias
  • Springeri Ferns
  • Impatiens
  • Diplodenias
  • Petunias
  • Zinnias
  • Caladiums

  • Lantana
  • Crotons
  • Song of India

Perennials

What are perennials?

Perennials are aptly named for their multi-year lifespan, which is ideal for those who prefer not to replant each season. You may not know that perennials also have another advantage as well. If you’re hoping to attract birds, butterflies, and other lovely creatures to your garden, perennials can help entice them. Perennials are known for bearing pollen, nectar, seeds, and nutrients for hummingbirds, butterflies, and more.
